The Collection

Cavalcade’s collection consists of over 8,000 items including 2,500 gowns, all of which have been donated by Australian women and their families, and includes accessories, men’s and children’s clothing. Provenance is fully documented for each item, when available from donors, for each item. Where possible, the gowns are named after the original wearer.


Cavalcade’s historic collection consists of three categories:

Heritage Collection

  • Used for significant heritage item research and limited display purposes.
  • Restricted handling.

Cavalcade Collection

  • Used for parades, presentations, displays and exhibitions.
  • Careful handling permitted.

Resource Collection

  • Used for educational purposes.
  • Unrestricted handling.

The Australian Dress Register is an online database of clothing prior to 1945. The collaborative collection consists of men’s, women’s and children’s gowns ranging from the everyday wear to special occasions. The Australian Dress Register currently features five gowns from the Cavalcade Collection as listed below:
