c1906 Dr James Frederick Watson

Date:
By  David O'Connell

Dr Watson’s grey morning suit is the popular variant where all parts, except the shirt, are the same colour and material, often grey, usually called 'Morning Grey' – only properly appropriate for weddings and races.

Impeccably tailored, James’ Morning suit consists of a morning coat in a cutaway front, single breasted style, a waistcoat, and formal trousers. Worn with a white butterfly collar and grey silk satin cravat.

This three-piece grey morning suit was worn by James when he married Muriel at St Marks Church Darling Point 12th September 1906.  Following their marriage, they lived in Orange for two years before they went to Europe in 1908 for two years where James studied Radiology. Upon their return, James practiced in Macquarie St Sydney. James and Muriel owned racehorses, one of which won the Melbourne Cup Steeplechase in 1926.
