Embroidered satin and net gown
Elizabeth is an empire style gown with a satin bodice and ecru net skirt over a satin petticoat. The gown is embroidered with cream flowers and green leaves. Around the rolled, padded hem are larger bunches of flowers and leaves. A green velvet ribbon trim and bow accentuates the high waistline. The bodice has a deep, square neckline with draw-tapes gathered across the front and back to allow a closer fit. Short, puffed sleeves with cream lace caps complete the outfit. Elizabeth also has a detachable muslin train embroidered with flannel flowers. The gown and train were bought second hand in Paris in the1850s. It is rumoured to have been worn by the Empress Josephine, wife of Napoleon, as it was known that she was interested in botany and collected rare plants, including Australian native wildflowers.
