In Britain, when Edward VII and his beautiful wife, Queen Alexandra, succeeded Queen Victoria in 1901, the pace of life seemed to change all over the world. The Edwardian era epitomised elegance and extravagance in dressing. The women were clothed to perfection in beautiful gowns, often featuring expensive laces and lavish accessories. 
The fashionable world revolved around the new King. There was great formality and immense luxury in women's dress. Close attention was paid to being at the height of fashion and wearing the correct clothes on all occasions.
